Elephant yam / Elephant Foot Yam / Whitespot Giant Arum (Amorphophallus companulatus Blume) is a vegetable. The fruit is grown underground. It is having almost the same color of soil.
It is very common in Kerala (a state in India), some other southern states of India, some other Asian countries and Africa. In Kerala it is called ‘Chena’ . The crop will weigh between 5 – 15 Kgs. It is used to make a large variety of dishes.
CULTIVATION
The cut pieces are used for the cultivation. There would be around 5 sprouts on each yam once kept for some period after harvesting. The pieces are cut for cultivation in such a manner that at least one sprout will be in each piece .
